Day 2: September 18, 2023 (City Tour in Edinburgh)

Our first day in Edinburgh! 

After a fabulous night of sleeping like kings and queens, the day was awaiting us all. Our planned sightseeing trip with little presentations, which we had prepared in the last weeks, was on the programme and we couldn't wait to see this majestic city by day. After some last practice sessions, we got our rain protection ready and started our tour. Our first stop was a supermarket to get some food for the day. It was quite rainy but this didn't stop us from enjoying the beautiful architecture of Scotland. On the way to the Scottish parliament, we went past the oldest house of Scotland. At the parliament we listened to the presentation of Yuki and Mia.

Not far from the parliament is the Holyrood Palace, which was introduced to us by Sara and Delia. We then entered the Palace and instantly felt home because everything looked just as fancy as in our accommodation. We had lunch in the beautiful gardens of the palace from where you can see the spectacular Scottish landscapes, and some of us realised that the bad weather in Scotland isn’t just bad marketing and we should have considered packing more wind-proof clothes. 

In the afternoon, we saw the city from above on Carlton Hill and learned from Sylvia and Katia that Edinburgh was called “Athens of the North” and we saw where the city is parted into the new and the old town. We made a stop at the Greyfriars Kirkyard where Isa and Robin told us a heart-warming story about a dog who didn’t leave the grave of its late owner. At the beautiful Viktoria Street Mael and Marieke made us feel as if we were in Edinburgh in the 18th century and to end the tour we saw the Edinburgh Castle with background information from Meret and Alessandra.  To make the presentations a little more interesting, many of us added a little special effect like karaoke with the national anthem, costumes and even some Harry Potter acting scenes. The rest of the day we spent exploring the city individually, made dinner and enjoyed our wonderful apartments.
